Ten Incredible facts

Ten Incredible facts that have little or no explanation

1.    Gravity

When Newton discovered gravity little did he realize that he had brought into the world something, which I believe, is quite hard to understand. The properties of this phenomenal force cannot be explained in a few routine sentences. In layman terms, we know from science, that gravity holds the stars and planets in space. It forms new stars and also destroys stars. Basically I would say gravity maintains the universe. We all know Moon’s gravity causes the ocean tides on Earth. In simple terms it means that a force exists between the Earth and the Moon. If this fact is true then the question which arises is that why is there a “no gravitational” zone between the Earth and the Moon? If you were to travel towards the Moon you will reach a zone outside the atmosphere of the Earth where you would be weightless. You will float so will everything, isn’t it? Scientists say that weightlessness is due to non existence of gravity. Both the theories are contradictory. Obviously the gravity does not curve to create a “no-gravity” zone in space. Here there is something that defies explanation. Scientists have accepted that inspite of gravitational forces there is a “free fall” zone in space. What is it?

1.    Reflected light

Light itself was a mystery till the discovery of the photons which are streams of particles called light. We all know that it is the reflection of light that allows a human being to see and recognize colours. However a mysterious phenomenon lies here. Say we are seeing a red flower. It literally means that red light is reflected back into our eyes. Scientifically the red light (a specific wavelength of light) is being reflected off the flower petals. But then where do the other light go? Namely the blues, yellows and greens? There are only two logical conclusions. Either all the light except the red is absorbed by the petals of are being reflected off in another form which is invisible. Have you ever thought on these lines?

If this is true than what about the reflected light from the red flower? Apart from the minimal amount that entered our eyes the rest has gone into space. The question is why can we not see this reflected light? And light that reflected of the dinosaurs or our forefathers?

1.    Distant Stars

The actual size of our universe is beyond human comprehension. The number of stars and planets cannot be depicted mathematically it is only estimated and the number is billion and trillions. Astronomers say that the vastness of the universe can be just imagined by the fact that here on Earth we are seeing many stars that are actually not there anymore. It is their light radiated during their existence that is now coming to Earth. So the fact remains that we can actually see a heavenly body that actually does not exist at all!

1.    Speed of light.

The speed of light is the ultimate mystery. According to Einstein if one exceeds this limit even the concept of time will change. It is quite a fact to comprehend. However let us see an example. For a man on Earth it would take 150 light years to make one complete cycle of our galaxy. Let us say a man on a spaceship travels around the galaxy at the speed of light or near about, then it would take him 23 years to complete a round. And the interesting part is that he will arrive on earth in the future! This being so the possibility of time travel to the past or future cannot be ruled out.

How long could you travel in a lifespan of about 90 years if you were to travel at the speed of light? 90 light years? No you could travel for thousands of years and you would live a life span of thousands of years. Scientists call this “time dilation”. Amazing isn’t it?

1.    Anti matter.

Have you ever heard of anti matter? It is basically the opposite of matter. For us an electron has a negative charge whereas in anti matter an electron will have a positive charge. This particle is called positron and the existence of these particles have been proved in the laboratory. Scientists have theoretically proved that if two streams of light or photons could be collided at high speed then the light energy would turn into matter and anti matter. Based on this assumption, if we were to analyze rationally and logically we must understand that there has to be an anti matter universe – an exact replica of our universe of matter but opposite in nature. If there is so much matter here formed out of energy then where is the counterpart of this matter? Hence the theories of parallel universes exist. And do you realize what scientists are thinking? They feel that black holes in the universe may be the doorways to those anti matter worlds.

1.    Life and death.

A subject which warrants a mention is life and death and of course sleep. What is life anyway? I think no one can define life death and sleep. They are unexplained truths but worth a closer look. Doctors will say that as soon as the human heart stops functioning or beating a man is dead or even when his brain has stopped performing. The body is still there but the inner soul, the ethereal energy or the spirit is gone. Where has the life gone? Could it be a transition to the anti matter universe - another world? Give it a second thought. And what happens during sleep? Are we not dead? For someone else we are living because our chest is moving, there are partial body movements maybe some sounds etc. But for me who is asleep I know and feel nothing I am dead. Then the question is where I am? Especially my strange innate energy called life? Am I somewhere else or in another world? Well, maybe.

1.    Vacuum

This is also an ambiguous word for me. Scientists describe it as void. The dictionaries say that it means emptiness and nothingness. The light bulb which we are so familiar with is supposed to be empty - vacuum. Space is supposed to be vacuum. The question is streams of particles called photons, which we call light are flowing out of the bulb and that too right through the vacuum. Consider outer space. Radio waves, ultra violet radiation, gamma rays and a whole lot of rays are passing through space all the time. If this be so than how can there be something called vacuum – absence of everything?

1.    Aliens

Albert Einstein said that we have to change the way we perceive things we got to change our thinking. This is correct because we ought to look for alien life from another angle. Scientists believe that life requires air, atmosphere, water, carbon hydrogen and a host of other attributes. If we think carefully, for example, a life evolving out of a sea of nitrogen may not have similar properties like the life on Earth. Is it mandatory for an alien to breathe, walk or behave like human beings? Can’t an alien be an aura of energy? Or a bubble? Don’t forget, as I have already mentioned above, that we human beings see things because light reflects off objects. Supposedly light did not reflect off an alien being, could we see it?

1.    Plants and vegetation on other planets

Similarly if we were to think of alien plants and vegetation we would have to view the matter from another angle. Alien vegetation need not be a replica of those on earth with leaves, flowers fruit etc. These are our local biological vegetation which has evolved on earth from carbon and hydrogen. For a species which has evolved from other elements may not appear like a plant at all. It may as well be a rock. Say a living rock. Biologically an alien plant need not have the requirement for chlorophyll or the need to have leaves or root or to bloom for propagation. One can think of many things.

1.    Absolute rest.

Last but not the least I would like to draw your attention to this concept. What do we mean by rest? Scientifically rest refers to a body having no motionor something that is absolutely still. But this is mysterious because I don’t see how anything is at rest. Is’nt the Earth moving at high speed? Everyone has heard of the great “big bang”, the origin of our universe. Astro physicists say that every heavenly body is moving away from each other at great speeds, like the spots on an inflated balloon. The universe too is in motion. If the Earth and the universe is moving can there be a concept called absolute rest? Can there be something without motion or movement? There is no plausible explanation.
